I think initially the BBC (and other news broadcasters/agencies) were told that she was ok. Then they released the news that she had died. The cynic in me wonders whether Diana had died already when they announced she had had the car crash but was at hospital and still alive. Bear in mind it was late at night/in the early hours and they needed to awake the Royal family, Tony Blair and the Government/establishment had to decide how to release the news and handle it as her death was (we hope) totally unexpected. We will never know the answer to any of this. May she rest in peace.

Simply because she wasn't dead when taken to hospital. The doctors spent a great deal of time trying to resuscitate her. 4am was only a short while after the accident and the situation concerning her survival or otherwise of the crash wasn't clear at that time to the media. I first heard the news via the BBC at about 9.30am when they were saying she had died. Not a conspiracy or anything.

It is possible that they didn't have all the information. From the reports I have read, Diana didn't die until around 4am, so if that is when the broadcast was made, the media wouldn't have known about it yet.

For much the same reason that American news casters reported the Titanic was limping to Halifax after colliding with the iceberg... ie many different conflicting reports, and confusion as to which is correct.

They report what info has come in sometimes it is wrong. If they wait too long to confirm it than they would be overtaken by competitors and not get the attention of the public.

being cynical i would say it was to give the news reporting teams time to get to grips with what had happened to report the real news to us the public and to allow time to tell the immediate family before mass hysteria broke out
