It is difficult to come up with an object differentiator. Without that it is just another arbitrary law that will be struck down.

It's because hate crime laws are stupid. No one who robs me, attacks me, or kills me; likes me. Usually people who murder other people, hate that person.
To make a crime have a more severe punishment because it's done to a certain minority, is a violation of the Equal Protection clause of the U.S. Constitution.
Are you talking about the new trend, to try to make words or symbols illegal because they offend some minority? That's equally stupid. What is this big deal about someone being offended? I am offended many times a day but I don't expect someone to make illegal what offends me.
Besides, the Constitution guarantees my right to have freedom of speech. Do you know that in Canada it is now illegal to say anything negative about homosexuality? It's called a hate crime. Canadians have lost any rights they had to free speech, if they ever had them.
If it gets that bad in America, then we are all lost. If it becomes illegal for anyone to state their opinion or belief, then it eventually devolves to where no one has any right to state their belief or opinion
When that goes, then, no liberty at all and no democracy. Authoritarian government here we come!
