It depends, you have to be really careful when downloading freewares or sharewares. Limewire itself is not spyware filled. I am pretty sure at least since i've had it for a while and nothing came out of it. Other softwares could be potentials, but you just have to do some background checking. Anti spywares can help protect you from spyware. Good programs like Nod32 can help prevent spyware from even infecting your computer.

Just don't steal music!
It's when you start downloading random things that look suspicious that get you spyware and viruses.
Good luck!

limewire IS a safe program, if you know how to use it. Downloading .EXE with a filesize of 228kb or something small like that is never a good idea. I've ran limewire for over 2 years now, and my PC is in as good of shape as ever. However, the process of limewire itself does slow your system down. :/

Bottom Line:
- never download .exe unless your sure of what your doing. Small files like i listed above (228kb, 778kb) are viruses/spyware.

- If you are in fear of being caught for downloading, i suggest you use Peerguardian 2, which blocks all IP address from Government/antip2p organizations. Just run that while your downloading...

- Your best bet in downloading songs is to get something with Variable Bit Rate. Read up on this! For example, most songs are 128,160,192,224, and 320 in bitrate. This is what determines the quality. If you see a file that is say... 217 or 196 it is best to get those!

-Always use up to date virus software. McAfee is more of a resource hog than limewire, and it hardly catches anything. I suggest using Avast! Its free, and not to mention better.

Ok, well, i hope this helps you with your downloading experience! I've included links to the Peerguardian website, and also the Avast! Antivirus website.

On another note, to the people who bash me for downloading... I DO buy music, just not bands that make CD's with one "hit" and the rest of the album is filler.

Hi mate,

All peer 2 peer networks and not safe as they are very prone to viruses and spywares. Always have a good antivirus and antispyware running on your computer and make sure they all are updated. I recommend not to use these peer2 peer file sharing like limewire etc as it does slow down the performance of your computer.

Hope this answers the question

Get RID of all software like Limewire, any filesharing software. There are news stories all over the internet about people being caught, college students among them, and big fines for illegal filesharing. One woman this month is being sued for $222,000.00! HELLO! UNINSTALL!

Limewire doesn't "come" with spyware it is just full of it. and people who use Limewire to steal music deserve to get viruses.
