What song would it be and in which genre would you choose?

I've always wanted to hear a cover of "I've Had The Time of my Life" in a hardcore vein. I have no clue why, I just think the whole thing would be funny.

sarah c: The Dickies did a punk version of The Sounds of Silence that is great. It's about 4x the speed of the original and sounds highly caffienated.

dan: That would be fantastic, VU covers in the island manner.

Buzzkill: I can hear that Starland Vocal Band tune in a heavy , fast, dirgelike manner vibrating within my head as I write this.

Sookie: Bluegrass Fugazi? Fantastic!

Recommend: It's not ruining it, it's simply enhancing the flavor.

I had totally forgot about the NOFX cover as well but that is a pretty swanky version.

Good question! I'm gonna go the road less traveled and say Minor Threat "Straight Edge" done in a bluesy John Lee Hooker style...if that's even possible.

Dan C - Damn this writers block! Just when I think I'm coming up with a completely original idea ; ) and even worse, I HAVE heard that song ...many times. NOFX did it a bit more jazzy/swingin' but I get your point.

OK - take 2: have any death metal bands done "Afternoon Delight"? With my luck they have.

I want to hear a Germs song, "Lexicon Devil" probably, sung by a slower paced band, not soft rock, just slower and smoother. Mainly because the only reason the lyrics fit is because Darby slurs so much, it would be neat seeing how someone else coped with that.

But I think that the track "Black Arabs" on The Great Rock 'N;' Roll Swindle takes the cake with three Sex Pistols songs turned into a disco medley. And the music for "God Save The Queen" is done by a symphony although they don't sing, just Malcolm Mclaren talking BS as usual.

How about a reggae version of "The Black Angel's Death Song" by the Velvet Underground, or "Venus In Furs" on the same album. That would be weird.

Oh, or anything by Suicide done in a more traditional rock way. Just because their sound is so weird it would be cool to see what it would sound like as a normal rock song.

Edit: To Buzzkill, NOFX redid "Straight Edge" in a slow bluesy jazz way if you haven't heard that. It's a joke but they kinda pull it off. Worth hearing for comparative reason if you haven't before.

Has anyone done a hardcore or punk version of "Shiny Happy People"? I'm sure they have, and I've missed it.

I would also like to hear a bluegrass version of Fugazi's "Waiting Room".

Redemption Song by Bob Marley in Punk Rock.

Totally random, but I'd do a Beach Boys song in metal. Since David Lee Roth did "California Girls", my favorite Beach Boys song, in hard rock, I'd do "Good Vibrations". Actually, I wouldn't actually do it, but I'd like to hear it. High-pitched vocals for lead role, deep vocals for background role, "surf metal" rhythm and lead guitars.

It'd probably ruin the song though.

I want to hear Simon and Garfunkel's The Sounds Of Silence done in a death metal way, it would be quite entertaining. It would just be odd....

*edit: I HAVE to check out that cover, it's gonna be one interesting experience.

Maybe a hard rock version of Garth Brook's "Friends in Low Places" would be entertaining.

Maybe a German "schlager" cover of Black Sabbath

(it's no joke/fun version - it's serious!!)
In the 60's / 70's there were a lot of German cover versions - this should be the best (worst).

a great example: have you watched the showtime show "weeds?" every week, they cover the theme with a completely different take from a different artist. it's a brilliant lead-in and fun to guess the artist. mondays at ten, then usually again at eleven.
