I have wireless internet in my house. Today I had gotten on my computer (a Macbook) and I was having trouble getting on the internet. It showed that I'm getting the signal I just wasn't able to access the actual internet. Well, I clicked on the wireless menu and it said that I was connected to someone elses in my neighborhoods wireless internet. I guess I have been on it for some time. I just didn't realize it.

I did some research and I guess my macbook automatically connects to an open wireless signal around me.

Well, a little bit ago I tried to get on my main computer which is directly connected to our internet. A message came up saying that our service had been disconnected for now.

I'm a little worried that the neighbor that I had been using has found out and complained to the service provider and they shut our service off.

Is it illegal to use another persons wireless internet?

Please and Thanks

It is illegal to use another person's network without permission

I doubt the service provider did anything.

The person could also track what you are doing on the internet and capture data packets to steal password information

You really need to check local laws.. Here is an example

In some places using someone's Wireless Network is illegal. But if you want to use it ask the permission of the owner. Sometimes wireless networks are bit dangerous speacially when hackers use it to hack someone's computer. If you will use someone's wireless network, be sure to turn off file sharing between 2 or more computers in the network. If you have no internet access but connected to a wireless network, maybe the settings of the computer/router is not to share it's internet connection or what they call "ICS" (Internet Connection Sharing).

NO. it is not illegal. Its just like listening to someone's radio that has it turned up to loud. It is our responsibility to protect our network. If you purposely hack someone's network to gain access then that is illegal. My neighbor is always connecting to my network by mistake because I never secure it. They lock up my old wireless router in the process. Thats my problem. You need to contact your isp if your having trouble connecting to your network. but its not related to you connecting to open connections. This wouldn't even pass a civil case, let alone a criminal one.

It is illegal if you bypassed a firewall to use it. If it's open access, as it is in this case, then no. They may have shut yours off if someone else was using it for something illegal. Always make sure to keep yours firewalled since there is no way for you to know what someone else is doing on it.
