I wouldn't have a problem with a mandatory 1 year of service of some kind--not necessarily only military service but some kind of volunteer service. It would have to be everyone, rich kids and poor kids alike.
People talk about -patriotism- but what do they really mean by it? What have YOU done for your country? I really respect people who have gone into the service out of a love for their country and wanting to protect it. THAT is patriotism! But we need a lot of things in this country, things that the 'magic of the market' doesn't provide. Repair of infrastructure. Child care. Pre-school. Stuff like that.
Now as for the military draft. Suppose every middle-aged couple had a kid in the military. And suppose the president wants to start a war. To these parents it's not a matter of 'Should we go to war?' it's a question of 'Is this war worth endangering MY kid?' People would think differently about it.
What if Bush had come to the American people and honestly said "This war is going to take years. It's going to cost maybe a trillion dollars. And many brave American kids are going to die. We ALL will have to make sacrifices. But I believe it's worth it, in fact we have no choice." Do you think many Americans would have supported the war? I don't. So he said 'Don't worry, it will be six weeks or so, it won't cost much and the oil will pay for it, and there won't be any causalties.' Yes, he told Pat Robertson there weren't going to be any American casualties!
So the biggest reason for a draft, ironically, is that it would keep us from getting into wars unless they were a last resort, unless they were really necessary! And we wouldn't have gotten into THIS war.

Personally, I always thought that the institution of a draft and mandatory service would come at a time when America undergoes a major shift in our fundamental philosophies about responsibility and patriotism. I think if there ever was a draft established, it would come after most Americans have agreed that its the best thing for the country anyway. Right now, the majority of Americans would probably be against a draft, because of a lack of feeling any responsibility for the direction their country goes. If we changed that mindset, most people would WANT to volunteer, at which point we could make service mandatory. At that point, it would be a minority that would "create... problems" as you said, so we wouldn't have to worry as much.
But none of this will ever happen, unfortunately.

Agreed
The only person o actually say he supports the draft is that scumbag Chuck Rangell.
His argument was all of the combat soldiers are poor blacks dying for the white devil. Reality says that the vast majority of combat soldiers are white.
His bill to reintroduce the draft was to show that the rich Republicans did not care about the poor soldiers and would think twice about Iraq if their kids had to serve.
Those sneaky Republicans pulled a fast one on Chuckie; they put it to a vote; anyone in favor of the draft has to go on record and stop the BS rhetoric.
I agree with you and so does America. The military is too specialized and technical to push a bunch of unmotivated people through on two years of service.
Needless to say even Rangell voted against his own bill

You are right, there would be a far lower standard of efficiency in the military if people who didn't want to go were forced to. As well as the fact that people who are not responsible or competent enough to handle the vast amount of technological equipment that the military now uses would be there as well. The reason the military is as powerful as it is now, is because the people who join are for the most part responsible and professional about their jobs, since they are doing what they WANT to do.
Most people recognize this, fortunately.

I agree to an extent. I was also in the service and feel there are too many ungrateful, self-centered, whiny runts that need a wake up call. So do something for someone other then yourself and see what the rest of the world is like before you sob like a baby that your life stinks, there is no opportunity, etc.....

The people who want a draft support the war, but are unwilling to go themself. At the same time they are also the people who will never get drafted. I am a perfect canidate for someone who would be drafted and I say, If there is a draft, I'll see you in Canada.

I support the draft. It works in Israel and has for decades. Everyone in Israel has to serve at least 2 years in the military. Not only does it help the military, it gives the people a sense of pride and patriotism in their own country.
As opposed to the fascist patriotism of the republican party in the USA: You are either with us or you are a traitor.

The draft is supported by many because they support the war efforts of the government.

Voluntary service is just another way of volunteering you and your children to speak another language and learn another culture in your own country, when THEY win. Do you think they volunteer to kill and invade us? They elect, like we used to. There is also no war without mass problems, pre, during, or post.
THINK!
