I'm purchasing a PC system rig for Christmas from NewEgg. I want a high end system, but not TOO high that I'm punching holes in my wallet. I don't plan on overclocking anything. Feel free to offer better prices and especially point out any glaring inconsistencies you have between the components. This is what I have planned....

-ASUS P5E LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX (~$249.99)
-Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz LGA 775 (~$279.99)
-Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB Asus DX10 (~$419.99)
-CORSAIR 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 533 SDRAM (~$49.99)

What I plan to recycle from my old system:

-450W Antec PSU (hey it's Antec, so that makes it stronger, right?
-Soundblaster Live! Audigy 2 ZS (Is this Direct 9x compatible?)
-Two 100 GB harddrives
-DVD and CD writer/reader

My ultimate question: Will all of this work alright? Does the CPU and video card compliment each other? What about the power supply -- is it adequate? Finally, what kind of cooling will be needed -- One fan? Two fans? Water cooling?

Thats a nice build except the ATI 2900XT is the most power hungry video card made and that 450watt Antec isn't going to cut it. The 2900XT also needs an 8pin power connection in addition to the 6 pin to run overdrive and the Antec doesn't have an 8 pin. I suggest this PSU to run that card.

There is a 1GB 2900XT out that benchmarks better than a GTX and is expected to dust the Ultra when optimized drivers come out and its barely any more than the 512 card.

If you have 26amps total on the +12V rails of your 450 PSU you may want to consider this card so you can use your Antec PSU and save money. It's the fastest clocked GTS made. I bought one and it rocks:

If your PSU doesn't have a 6pin connector for the video card and you buy that GTS you will need one of these cuz the card doesn't come with one:

One last thing. That 533 ram is not going to cut it with that X38 motherboard. It's designed for DDR2 1200 but runs DDR2 800 fine and I wouldn't run anything slower than 800 in it. The 2 ZS is a good card and is compatible with DX9.
I have one in my gaming rig that ran fine when I had XP(DX9) in and runs fine with Vista(DX10) in it now. As far as cooling goes make sure you get the new SLACR version of the Q6600 with the G0 stepping instead of the SL9UM because the SLACR runs cooler and uses less power. If you're not overclocking the stock fan/heatsink will be adequate. Should have at least 2 80mm cases fans, one in front, one in back sucking air in thru the front and out the back.

my opinion.
the quad core processor is over kill.
the video card is over priced.
the rest of the stuff is fine.
