It wasn't very unlike any other revolution. The leaders (Czar Nicholas) and the elite had lots of power and food. The normal people (called Bolshevik) weren't happy about how the country was being run and thought they could do it better.

In October of 1917, the Bolsheviks who wanted to take over attacked the Czar's palace, captured him and his family, and executed them.

It turns out that there were more people supporting the way things were than thought and from 1917-1922 there was a Civil War in Russia between the Bolshevik Red Army and their opponents, the White Army. The socialist Red Army ultimately won and Russia became the leading part of the Soviet Union (USSR).

This all happened at the same time as WWI but was a whole different event.

The Russian Revolution of 1917 was the overthrowing of the Russian monarchs and nobles and the beginning of Communism in Russia. It was also a upheaval of the social environment of Russia.

The Russians actually withdrew from World War I because of the Russian Revolution. The Russian people were tired of their king, Czar Nicolas II (who was acting as their general although he had no military experience) and revolted against him because thousands of their people were dying because of his poor, or lack of military planning.

The Russian upper class was a small population of people who lived in luxury and wealth. They were very snooty and believed themselves to be far better than the millions of Russian peasants who worked themselves dawn until dusk who often starved because they couldn't earn enough money to feed themselves.

Czar Nicolas II, his wife Alexandra, and their children were part of this upper class. They spent their days dining, dancing, and entertaining themselves with no concern about the rest of the Russian people, the majority of whom were victims of the dreadful socio-economic conditions (poor and of low class) in Russia.

The loss of much weaponry and the lives of countless soldiers contributed to the widespread thought that Nicolas II was weak and unfit to rule Russia. Finally, a group called the Bolsheviks (including Lenin and Stalin) decided that it was time to take action against their weak and spoiled czar.

The Bolsheviks led an armed attack on the palace where the czar and his family lived. They placed the royal family under house arrest, later executing them.

The Bolshevik party, now controlling the government, set out to "reform" Russia. Their new governement would be based on the ideas of Karl Marx, a political idealogy called "Marxism". Russia, now Communist, would remain so for the next nearly seventy years.

The Bolsheviks created Collective farms, which were owned by the government. Hundreds or thousands of people would work on these farms and get a standard pay. The profits would go back to the government which were used to fund more collective farms or other public resources.

The Russian people were unhappy with these farms. The people who had once owned their own farms (but were now forced to give them up to the government) hated working other people's land. There was no personal incentive to work harder because you would never get more than the standard pay, no matter how had you worked. This was one of the major flaws of Marxism.

Communism was set out to create a classeless nation. But this gave the people no incentive to try to rise higher, to try to achieve more. Everyone was paid the same, treated the same, and everything was done for the common good of the government.

Eventually, Russia became a democracy. It remains so up until today.
