The Senate has 49 Democrats, 49 Republicans, and 2 Independents. These Independents "caucus," or vote with the Democrats, thus they have a 51-49 majority in actuality.

In the house, Democrats have 233 seats to the Republicans 202.

So both are controlled currently by the Democratic party, though in both cases the totals are fairly close.

The Senate President controls the activities of the Senate while the Speaker controls the House. Presently, the Democrats control both Senate and House.
