You'll need all the top end gaskets, rocker box, head and base gaskets.
You're supposed to do the base gasket whenever you loosen the bolts which means you'll need a ring compressor, sometimes one can pull the head with out disturbing the base gasket ,but you may not know until the bike is back together.
You'll need a torque wrench and the torque pattern for the heads and specs. for the rocker boxes.
You'll also need a can of copper gasket spray.

Let me ask you this? Is it leaking oil at the head?? or did you just feel hot air??

If you only felt air, check your exhaust gaskets before doing your head.

Ride On is giving you good advice, make sure it is the head gasket before you go further. I would definetly buy a shop manual.Buy it from the Harley shop, they cost a little more(about $60) but are much better manuals.A head gasket is an easy job and a good place for you to start learning about your bike. I get a lot of satisfaction by doing my own wrenching and if something goes wrong I know what to do.
Good Luck.

Just by the way your asking the question, I believe you'll be getting into something that you might not be able to handle on your own. Not that your not handy with your hands or anything insulting. If you don't get everything right and to specs, you might be in for a very expensive learning experience. I'd say you'd be better off if you would take it to a Harley Dealer even though they are very expensive. I'd sure hate to see ya hurt things any more than what you got now.

I had a 1983, now my brother has it. I never had to do this. I did have a shop manual. I think the head just unbolt. The push rods come up from the crank case so there not any chains or other things to undo. May not even need to loosen the push rods if you can turn the engine to a point the rods let all valves close and not have pressure on them.
I guessing it on the back jug/cylinder???
Newer models from mine may be different.

I think u need to replace the gaskets. As for how to do, i am not very clear. I advise u to get on a site called bikerkiss to get more info. There are many professional motorcyclists there. I think they will give u some useful info.

probably just a an exhaust leak,or loose spark plug. with it running spray some wd40 into the air cleaner & see where the smoke comes out.
or put on a pair of levis like a normal biker & just ride it, when you see some guys with Harleys stopped some where ask one of them to look at it. free diagnosis & you might make some new friends,

before you replace the head gaskets find out WHY the head gasket blew in the first place!
there are many reasons that would cause a head gasket to go, and if you don't correct those reasons then ur going to waste ur time and money cause the new gaskets are going to fail again.
I think ur in over ur head, I suggest you take it to a factory trained, certified HD Service Technician
