Any party that encourages racial and social bigotry as part of its platform is bad for the country.

The Republicans developed a complex after not being able to win congress for something like 40 years. Why, because people just didn't buy into their beliefs, their platform. They got a President in every once in a while but couldn't take control. They made a plan to capture the constituencies that they were able to, a couple of those being ultra conservatives, the religious right, the rich and corporations. They changed their platform. They also put together a propaganda machine the likes of which has never been seen. So, it's all about money, money, money, lies, lies, lies. Now there is nothing more dangerous than a well funded power hungry politician who starts to believe their own rhetoric. Once they captured congress AND the Presidency, they reacted with the exuberance of a college underdog who just won the national championship. Heady stuff. Time to pound you chest, celebrate yourself, and rape and pillage the town. When your on top like that no one else matters. They decided to govern only half of the country. They turned there backs on those who didn't vote for them and handed the country over to their supporters, that is, the corporations, the rich and ...well the religious right has kinda been screwed. They really haven't gotten much. Victims of believing the hype. OK? I know this is all very cynical and simplistic, but pretty much sums it up. I don't have all night.

nightwind....good god! Check MY party sign at the door? You need to check your party sign, T-shirt, straw hat and elephant underwear. For the record, I am a registered independent and as my screen name implies, I have not drunk anyone's Kool-Aid. I know plenty or good Republicans that are livid about the state of the current party leadership. Please start to think. Your entire view seems to have been garnered from old campaign speeches of Republican politicians. The Dems have issues too, but I didn't see where z' asked about the Dems. Apparently you did. But this isn't about me and you....or the Dems. If you think there is nothing wrong with your party right now........wow! OK.
(I think the people handing out thumbs are biased. Don't you?)

The people who are in power now are not at all true to Republican ideals. You could call them RINO's (Republicans in name only.) They are only concerned with big money interests. They don't care about the sovereignty of the country. Bush and his cronies want to keep the invasion of illegals flowing to provide cheap labor for the billionaires who put them into office. Most true Republicans are fed up with them and afraid that they have turned a lot of good people away from the party. I've always believed that the Republican party was less harmful to the country than the Democrats. Bush has almost gotten me to question that long-held belief.

It's not the Republican party you need to worry about. You should be afraid of the liberal democrats. They're the true terrorists. Read 1984 by Orwell, does any of it sound vaguely familiar? Think about all of Hillary's speeches and votes as a Senator. She is the most evil woman on the planet, just barely beating Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Boxer.

Nice dialogue but I think if you check your party sign at the door, History proves the democrats to be of more danger than Republicans.
Republicans want people to be responsible, they want people to be independant, they spread a message not of doom and gloom like the Liberals and Democrats, but a message of "you can do it" . They don't want you to give up your personal choices and have big Government in your life. They don't want people in Government to make important decisions for you like healthcare. Now I can't say they've done everything right, I can't understand Mr. Bush's sudden flop from Republican values regarding NAFTA and the immigration bill. But i'd rather have someone who has common sense, that is conservative, that wants a strong America than Democrats.
They promise to clean up American politics yet they have committed most of the aggregious acts of corruption themselves. They raise taxes to pay for socialist programs and when a program is discontinued, they keep the money. Meanwhile...although Government in gerneral wastes tax money left and right,....a conservative doesn't ask for more usually. Demo's want big Government in your life making important decisions for you. Your talking about career polititions here, yet you'll trust them with heathcare ? and your tax money ? You'll see them flat out lie on the senate floor and to America ? They've been preaching doom and gloom ...they been demoralizing our troops, they've been covering up campaign contributions...yet Demo's where the one's saying they would push campaign finance reform.
Socialisn hasn't worked in history, and we don't need America heading that direction.
Sure, i'll admit, in the big Conservative push trying to get people strong and independant, there are a few that do fall through the cracks and are left out. That is not good and not right,
How long have the Demo's been preaching to the African Americans ? about 30 years, promising they will change their life and make things right ? Not much ahs changed. II don't want some Democratic neo nazi ruling over my life. We already work 3 or 4 months a year to pay taxes which Government haven't proven themselves to be responsible with. I have no interest in giving them more.
You ask what went wrong with the Republicans ? Nothing, you just need to find a candidate with some balls to stand up for what they say they stand for. The question in truth is, where are the old JFK democrats ? they no longer exist. That is how much the party has changed. I could go on forever with their betrayals.
How about Poloski undermining the Government by taking a tour to talk to terrorist nations ? Not her job and she had no authority.
How about Slick Willy's China gate...It came back with Hilary Clinton...first getting money from a co-sponsor with china connections then lying about not knowing the guy.
Who's been supressing the news that the war is going well ?
Who's been attacking conservatives and bashing people in the media. What about Move on.org and their bashing of general Petreaus ? like I said. I can go on forever.
Bottom line is, you can call Republicans a little incompetant in certain segments. but at least they don't as a party, come out and lie on the senate floor, lie to the American people and their base. They don't put words in peoples mouth, they might play politics, but they don't play the dirty little games democrats do.
