rent is reasonable around here...we pay $325 a month for a fully furnished two bedroom 1 bath appt. we have a great landlord too. if we need anything, all we have to do is call him.
the most expensive i have seen is a brick home with 3 bedroom and 2 baths for $700 a month.
we live in northeast louisiana.

Kens prices seem about right. Have not been in that area for 4 years now. But I would join some Philippine expat groups for advice here. They can help you more than most can. I am returning to Davao in January and found a nice place from a Brit. for 12000 Pesso a month there furnished in a good area. 1 bedroom. Larger apartment with shared pool + utilities but free internet and T.V. Threw some one I know there. Also on arival. Meet with a expat in Mania, buy a beer or two and get some advice first off from one. Manila is one of the top 100 citys world wide in cost to live as well. I will also be there house setter there till they return. 3 month stay this trip for me there. And renting short term furnished is usually not that cheap there. + maid service 2 times a week by a family member of his wifes. And give her the utility money.

If I could find a one bedroom apartment for 850.00 a month I would be thrilled..but you said realistic, so I guess I could MAYBE find one for 925.00 if I got lucky (Central California)
