Dial is incorrect - in the past private practice was lucrative, this is changing - many are returning to the public sector for this reason.
The beginning salaries listed by the other poster are on the HIGH side - it is best to look at the salaries in a range. Beginning BSW is 20-40, MSW 30-60, and PhD is 50-60 (for academia) and 50-100 in research.
So a lot is a relative term, you will make more than some, but much less than others.

Most don't make what is typically considered "a lot of money." The popular belief is that social workers barely make any money.
The answer, however, is that it depends on what you're doing within the field of social work. Clinical social workers who do psychotherapy in private practice can make 50-100k per year. Those in governmental, public policy, hospital, and other fields might make a lot less than this.
In short, "social workers" encompass a wide variety of professions and jobs, which all pay differently.

not a lot of money but sufficient indeed, besides whatever your work is if you do not know how to save and live with it you'll end up complaining and wouldn't grasp the purpose of what you do.
