Hydrogen peroxide is a harmful by-product of many normal metabolic processes: To prevent damage, it must be quickly converted into other, less dangerous substances. Catalase is frequently used by cells to rapidly catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into less reactive gaseous oxygen and water molecules. Catalase is present in all types of tissues, but is particularly abundant in the liver.

Animals should have more catalase than plants, because animals have higher metabolic rates. The liver carries out more metabolic processes than any other tissues.

Catalase breaks down hydrogen peroxide. It is much more common in plants due to its use in photosynthesis and nitrogen fixing.
