I am looking for serious answers, comical ones surely welcome however. I am in a debate as to whether sex outside of procreation is a need or just a want.

yes, I am aware I am posting in the biology section, as I figured it just made sense as to the context of the question.

no, this is not with the inclination of wanting a child...this is for pure pleasure.

nothing is needed except food and air. for better health you can exercise and eat right. sex is good for mental health. also it can make relationships stronger b/c of the release of hormones during and after which tie partners, and just in the fact that you feel "loved" or wanted. It can also of course lead to obsession or unhealthy relationships.
When a woman orgasms the hormones released can lead to bodily effects which improve the immune system and clean the body, or so i've read.
Ppl can go their whole lives w/o it, so it depends on what your definition of need is. Most ppl want it. some ppl, believe it or not, don't, b/c they were emotionally scarred or simply b/c they don't have the drive.

Good call on posting this in the Biology section. It is not often we get a "just curious question" in this section. Most are homework-related questions.
If by adults we are talking the human race, then the answer is both.
For organisms that reproduce via sex, remember the evolutionary goal for all these organisms is to pass on their genes to the next generation through offspring. If we want to be minimalist evolutionary biologists we would say the purpose of life is to procreate. Obviously, this is not the goal for all humans, but our animal instinct is to "desire" sex because we want to procreate. Now, our actual conscience motive for why we are having sex can differ in a psychological/philosophical sense. However, the underlying physiological processes (hormones and so forth) that makes an adult have a strong desire for sex, is likely due to evolutionary pressures for organisms to have "built in" reminders that they should have sex to make offspring for the next generation.

depends whether you regard kids as a necessary or an optional part of life. I realize you specify non-procreative sex, but that's kind of an artificial distinction, in my opinion. The driving force behind sex doesn't make that distinction - why should you?

yes, adults need sex....
remember that the desire to have sex is expressed in hormones, so the biology is the reason behind why The Adults WANT AND NEED sex.............

YOU know that you NEED to eat, and that's why you WANT to eat....
that is the same thing with sex here

As individuals, sex is a "want" (at least for most of us). As a species, sex is a "need".
