You've gotten some good synonyms for presiding. I agree the word does sound like synonim but it is spelled synonym. Use the spell checker. It is there to help you.
With regard to the word presiding, you can also simply say. "He sat at the head of the table," since the act of simply being at the head of the table indicates a position of authority and command.
