Football is pretty clearly number one, but baseball probably is second depending on how you count. The TV ratings aren't bad by today's standards, ahead of the NBA. NCAA basketball does reasonably well.
"National pastime" is a throwback to the good old days of pre-World War II.

Your information is wrong baseball has beaten basketball in the ratings for the last couple of years don't believe me take a look at these numbers.
World Series Rules Wednesday for FOX as they averaged a 10.5 rating for the night and a share of 17. Game 1 of the World Series is higher then the NBA 2006 Final game 10/18. In 2007 the NBA had historical low ratings. Sounds like the NBA is the one in decline.

Lowest rated sport in the nielson ratings wrong again that would be the NHL. Golf and Tennis would also be lower in the ratings. How could I forget Soccer yeah also gets lower ratings.
OK NFL since 1960's passed baseballs America's most popular sport so know tell me something I didn't know. Baseball is America's past time as it has the most history of all the other sports.
If your a NASCAR fan ratings are also down his year.

It is etched into our culture almost. So much that alot of the time people take it for granted. I'm pretty sure more than 5 % of the country like baseball.
Its just that other sports like, Football, Hockey, and Basketball are on for a much shorter time frame. and baseball is only off during the winter. So people watch those sports after waiting so long for them.

Im a big sports fan period, baseball or basketball is my favorite, but sorry in case you baseball traditionalists are in denial, this is a football nation. The NFL is #1 in sports in the US as far as numbers are concerned. The America Pastime thing is an oldschool saying that applied generations ago, not so much in 2007.

you may take off the stragedy or attempt area. the sport does handle stragedy, and does take attempt, the skill of hitting a tumbler throwing ninety mph or harder with circulation enormously a slider not an straightforward factor to do, or a attempt pitching or catching and spot in case you locate those to be uncomplicated. the sport additionally relies upon heavily on scouting comments so the pitcher is conscious a thank you to pitch to the batter, one straightforward blunders from the pitcher, that ball frequently going for a protracted holiday. So stragedy is a huge area of the sport. country's previous time is with the help of the fact in case you became into to take a ballot, you will possibly locate that maximum folk have performed the sport from one factor or yet another. A %.-up game with friends, business enterprise and so on..., better than the different game. consequently this game maximum folk relate too. Its additionally the only game that the protection has the ball.

because baseball was an incredibly large part of our country's culture, only then football caught up, even though it's like the gayest cocept ever when you think about it (a bunch of guys in tight pants touching each other)
but anyway, baseball is also the first sport invented by this country, (the only other 2 being basketball and football) besides, its the awesomest sport ever created :)
