(a) when scale is 1 in : 2ft
It means a 1 in dimension in a blueprint is equivalent to 2ft in real dimension. This is done to shrink the size of real dimension proportionally.
so 8ft can be represented by 8/2 = 4 in
and 12ft can be represented by 12/2 = 6 in
so a 8 ft-by-12ft room is represented by 4 in - 6in in a blueprint

(b) when scale is 1 in : 4ft
so 8ft can be represented by 8/4 = 2 in
and 12ft can be represented by 12/4 = 3 in
so a 8 ft-by-12ft room is represented by 2 in - 3in in a blueprint

hey, im austin and im in my first semester of drafting and design. we do alot of this in class, its real easy. so, if you have a room that is 8' x 12', you cant draw that whole thing to full scale because that would be one ginormous piece of paper! an 8' x12' piece of paper is just not practical! lol, so what they do is scale it down. an example would be, for every foot in "real life", that equals an inch on the paper. the scale would be 1:1, or 1foot equals 1in. so the dimensions in the drawing would be 8in by 12in. now this question is asking for the dimensions of the drawing with a scale of 1in equals 2ft. so for every 2 feet of the room, that is drawn as 1 inch on the blueprint. your blueprint dimensions would be 4in by 6in. now for the next scale, 1in equals 4ft, the blueprint dimensions would be 2in by 3in. if you have any questions or dont understand something i said, just shoot me an email and il try to explain it better! good luck!

if each 2ft is represented by 1in
then 8ft is 4in

4ft is 1 in. in the other dimension then
12ft is 3 in

so the blueprint dimension is 4 in. x 3 in.

just divide:

for 1in:2ft, convert 8ft to inches by dividing by 2ft. so its going to be 4 inches one way and 12/2, or 6 inches the other way.

for 1in:4ft, divide 8ft/4ft=2in, and 12ft/4ft=3in. so the room is 2in by 3 inches.
