Yes indeed and it was before divorce and living with someone before marriage became usual. My parents are both gone now, but still my family cannot be close because we haven't been raised together in the same house ! My friends are my family now! I see them more often than my family who lives out-of-town!
After a while, one gets use to be dysfunctional and doesn't compare the family to the others. We learn to live with the way it is! And we are not miserable or unhappy by doing so because we accept things as they are and leave the past behind!

Compared to many of the families I work with no - and for so long I relied on the possibility that my family was extremely dysfunctional to explain myself and my behaviors........darn it!!
