24 hours. I think it was hit by an asteroid. Why do you think it got so bright? Look NE tonight and see the extra star in Perseus. It is easy to see the fuzzy star in binoculars.

Yes, quite obvious through binoculars, even with the full moon. Thanks for the heads-up. Outbursts like this can happen when the comet suddenly blasts out a large amount of gas and dust. An asteroid impact would be a very unusual event - do you have a particular reason for thinking that's what happened?
