Uh...I'll give this a shot:
In no particular order:
1. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II. Very good blues-rock/hard rock album, but more importantly, it was influential to hard rock and metal.
2. Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Mainly because of the production techniques and wide use of instruments.
3. Beach Boys - Pet Sounds. A somewhat different direction the Beach Boys took, it has some great writing. It was an influence to the album mentioned before this one, utilizing several production techniques, instruments not normally used in rock, and even objects that make sound but aren't instruments.
4. Nirvana - Nevermind. I don't like Nirvana much, but this definitely is the most influential album of the 90's. It had so much impact that it made alternative rock mainstream, and it still influences many musicians today.
5. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced? Jimi Hendrix's debut album. It took rock 'n' roll guitar in a new direction, influencing many guitarists, be it contemporaries or later guitarists.
Just an opinion.

Not because they are my favorite bands, because as you said, the foundation on which modern music was based on.
1.The Beatles - Revolver
2. Elvis Presely - Elvis Presely
3. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV
4. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
5. Ramones - Ramones
My favorite bands are Lamb Of God, Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying ect but I know where the foundation of morden music comes from. Notice I covered the many different genres such as pop, metal, and punk.

I would have to go with the top 5 best selling albums in the US. Since those albums are owned by the largest number of people then they must have the largest influence.
1. Eagles - Their greatest hits
2. Michael Jackson - Thriller (which is #11 on the global scale)
3. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV
4. Pink Floyd - The Wall
5. Ac/Dc - Back in Black (this kind of ties w/ Billy Joel's Greatest Hits but since Ac/Dc is higher ranked on a global scale I put them in the #5 slot)

To the guy above: Most-owned does not equal most influential for one simple reason: Not everyone who buys an album is a musician.
And I dread living in a world where the most-influential album is a "best of" compilation, anyway.
My take:
The Beach Boys-Pet Sounds

Captain Beefheart-Trout Mask Replica

Iggy & the Stooges-Raw Power
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:axfpxql5ldje
King Crimson-In the Court of the Crimson King

The Velvet Underground-The Velvet Underground & Nico

EDIT: I would also add that the most influential album of the '90s is more likely Ten, not Nevermind, simply because greater than 90% of the post-grunge bands that have popped up over the last fifteen years lift more from Pearl Jam's sound than Nirvana's.
