Saudi Arabia has only existed as a state since 1926, when the ibn Saud family declared the independent kingdom. It was acknowledged by Great Britain a year later and the kingdom was formally named the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. Since that time, there have been no major invasions or occupations. There were occasional border skirmishes with Yemen but those ceased with a treaty in 1934. Great Britain, Turkey and the Soviet Union have never been occupying powers of this state.

Prior to 1926, however, the ibn Saud family attempted to form a state twice. In the 18th century, they declared independence from the Ottoman Empire, but the Ottomans sent an Egyptian army to reconquer the peninsula. The 2nd Saudi state lasted most of the 19th century, but by the 1st World War, the Ottomans once more controlled the region.

The defeat of the Ottomans in 1918 resulted in the collapse of the Empire. The Treaty of Versailles concerned Germany. The remains of the Ottoman Empire was dealt with in the Treaty of Sevres (1920) and Lausanne (1923). The Arabian peninsula essentially became independent and the ibn Saud family won an internal struggle among Arab families to form the state.
