In his autobiography, Bob Uecker mentioned this technique -- he did it too -- while running the bases. If you knock your helmet off (without it being too obvious), it makes you look like you're running that much faster.
Uke also wrote that his proudest achievement was catching none of the 1964 World Series; Cardinal teammate Tim McCarver handled every pitch, all seven games.
