The other day, my mother was talking to me on the phone...the doctor called on the other line. My mom talks very loud so you can pretty much hear the conversation. So apparently, the Dr. ask her if she drinks. She lied and said she only has$ one drink on the weekends. She lied, she drinks about 4 bottles of wine a day! Does anybody know if I can talk to her doctor...Does it violate hippa laws?

I am very concerned...She does have osteoporosis and I don't want it to progress faster because of her drinking.

What do you suggest

If you think that the Dr. needs this information, call and leave a message for him to call you about your mother. Let him know that she is not being truthful about her habits, and you are concerned about her health. He can't talk to you about her treatment, but he can listen about what is going on.

Hi Jane, lying to a Doctor is very dangerous and I don't blame you for being concerned. The amount of alcohol you describe is not helpful for any medical condition. It may be good for you to research the effects of alcohol in relation to osteoporosis, but you must remember you cant stop her from drinking. It is not your fault, nor your responsibility. It is up to her. It may be helpful to check with a Dr, it doesn't necessarily have to be your Mothers. If you have other family members who can help you and you feel safe that is also an option. Something I would recommend is looking into the phone book and finding support groups for alcohol abuse. There are many different types, and it is a safe place to learn how to help everyone affected by alcohol abuse. For any questions you may want to consider calling 1-888-4ALANON. There are people there who can help you. I wish you the best.
