Lincoln, in his 1863 cemetery-dedication speech, alluded to the 1776 Declaration of Independence, when he observed that 87 years earlier our ancestors had "brought forth on this continent a new nation". (The very purpose of the Declaration was to announce the birth of a "new nation" separating itself from its "mother country, England.)

He went on to describe that new nation as "conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."
Then, he segued from the past to his present time (while the U.S. "War Between the States" was still raging), by saying, "Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure."

Not long ago, most schoolchildren studied (and often memorized the 271 words of) this brief, immortal speech. It is indeed a sad commentary on "public education" that, nowadays, so many adults seem to have never even heard of it.

It remains to be seen how much longer his prediction will last
beyond the seven score and four years since he concluded "that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
