Travesty means a false representation of something. Often you hear the phrase "a travesty of justice" when the wrong person is sent to jail. So in this case, justice is not done, is falsely represented or distorted.
"The play we saw with naked people eating ice-cream while riding tricycles was a travesty."

The verbs am, is, are, was, and were are all forms of the verb be. The verb be does not show action. It tells what someone or something is or is like. The verbs 'am', 'is', and 'are' tell what someone or something is now. I am a painter. He is a painter. is a painter meaning he is now a painter You are a painter. Was and were tell what someone or something was in the past. She was an artist. You were an artist. They were all artists. in the past You were all artists. Use am, is, and was with I, she, he and it. Use are and were with we, they and you. a) Those mountain peaks(is,are) a great challenge to a climber. first of all we must identify the subject in the sentence that the verb would be describing it's action and the word is "peaks" the word "peaks" refers to a lot of things so after a plural subject so a singular verb would come after it so the answer would be ( is) b) Stars on a dark night(is,are) a splendid sight. subject is stars, so stars is a plural subject so the answer would be " is" a singular verb c)His Twin daughters (is,are) the apple of his eye. the subject is " his" it's a singular subject so their will be a plural verb so the answer is " are" ----------------------------------------... a) The thousands of dollars they spent (was, were) a terrible waste. the subject here is dollars and it's a plural subject so the answer would be a singular verb which is " was" the verb was is like is but only in the past and the verb "is" is as in now or present b)Hot dogs and beans(was, were) my father's favorite meal. the word and refers that their are two subject so two singular subject combined with and and form a plural subject which indicates that the verb would be singular so the answer is " were" were is the past tense are c) The unfair trials (was, were) a travesty of justice. the subject here is trials because this what the sentence is talking about and trials is a plural verb so the answer would be a singular verb which is " was "

The OJ Simpson trial was a travesty of justice.
"A crude, distorted, or ridiculous representation of something; a grotesque or farcical imitation for purposes of ridicule."
(Webster's New World Dictionary, Second College Edition)
Note that a travesty can be intentional or unintentional. A play may be intentionally a travesty. My sentence above is an example of something that is supposed to be serious turning unintentionally into something grotesque and absurd.

Gee whiz. I usually avoid commenting negatively on other answers but in this case two of the answers show a misunderstanding of the word.
A travesty refers to something which represents itself as done well, but is in fact done poorly. The San Diego fires are bad, but they are not a travesty, because they are not a poor representation of something done better. 9/11 was evil, but it was not a travesty. Sending an innocent man to jail is a travesty of justice because it represents itself as doing justice when in fact it perpetuates injustice; A bad play is a travesty because it represents itself as a good play.
Maybe you might feel that this answer is a travesty because it could be written better.
