My 4 month old daughter has a Dr. appointment tomorrow, but I wanted to get opinions. For the past almost 2 weeks she's had this rash on her bottom...at first it just looked like a normal diaper rash, and it started to get better with a few applications of Balmex. But the past few days, it's not looking like a normal diaper rash...instead of the whoel thing being red, it's red bumps everywhere! I feel so bad for her...anyone know what it could be?

I don't think it's the diapers, the rash started when we were using Pampers and now we're using Huggies. And same goes for the wipes...we changed the brand of them too! Nothing seems to be helping...

I agree with the people who say it is probably a yeast infection. Sounds exactly like what my youngest daughter suffered with for most of her diaper wearing years. We had quite the procedure with diaper changing. First, we wiped the whole area with warm water on a cloth - wet wipes stung her, then we let her air dry at least a few minutes, 5 was better, then a layer of Nystatin cream followed by a thick layer of Desitin. She had plenty of baths cause that soothed the area and lots of time laying in the porta-crib naked to air it out. Until the doctor can see her, try using warm water washes and lots of air drying. It'll help her feel better a little.

Now that my DD has started teething she got some nasty rashes that no matter what diaper cream I used would not go away! It was exactly as you described- red bumps and sometimes raw. I used regular 15% zinc oxide cream and the 40% for days but never got any better.
My friend told me to try Canesten (Clotrimazol 1%) anti-fungal topical cream. I asked my Pharmacist and he said it is perfectly safe and to use it 2-3 times a day along with regular diaper creams.
It worked like a charm! Within 2 days the rash was clearing up and if you can catch a rash before it gets really bad it will be gone by the end of the day.

The best thing to use in my opinion is A&D ointment.
Do not use "baby wipes" that have alcohol or propylene glycol to clean the skin while a diaper rash is present. These may burn the skin and spread bacteria on the skin.
You may use a blow-dryer set on warm setting to get the diaper area fully dry on adults. Do not use a blow dryer on babies or small children.
Leave diapers and incontinence briefs off as much as possible.
Protect the healthy skin near the rash with a cream such as Desitin, Diaparene, A&D Ointment, or zinc oxide. Do not apply the cream to broken skin, because it can slow the healing process.

My guess would be a yeast infection. They are quite common in the diaper area of babies (both boys and girls). If it is pimply looking and not getting better then I would say yeast. If it is the doctor will prescribe a nystatin cream or powder to apply to her bottom. If it is not yeast antibiotic ointment may do the trick. It can work wonders on diaper rash, however if it is a yeast infection antibiotic ointment will make it worse. So, wait until tomorrow to see what your doc says. Good luck, poor baby ....

Sounds like yeast to me. My daughter had it too and the doctor prescribed Nystatin. It only cleared it for a day, but Bordreaux's Butt Paste (you can get it at any store) worked the best. And the type of diaper doesnt matter, its BEING in the diaper that causes it....let her butt breath some fresh air!! :-)

Ugh that is awful I have been there but I don't use balmex the one and only thing that works for my daughter is Aquafor. It might sound funny but you can buy it at wal-mart or any drug store. It is a lot cheaper then the perscription the doctor is going to offer but it is strong. I still use it on her once in a while but that stuff works! Also let her butt air out some too. There might be too much moisture and try using cornstarch that helps a lot + changing her more often.

my daughter has had ONE bad diaper rash & no reg. diaper rash cream worked! my doc had to make her own special "baby butt balm" and it works after ONE application!! the 3 ingredients are :
clotrimazon/hydrocortizon/destin (But the CVS brand.cheaper)
its a mixture the pharmacy had to mix up! it works AWESOME!
ask your doc when you go, to make a mixture, your baby could be allergic to the balmex also! mine is alergic to all baby rash cream!
and also like everyone else says, airing out is the best!!
I also got the expensive goldbond powder (extra strength) and load that on her every other diaper, after i let her air out & it works a lot!
she had one a few weeks ago, while she was teething & it was like little red bumps all over & the doc said its normal for teething, just let her air out, and put nothing on it, could irritate it more!
good luck! :) and hope your doc. has some solutions! :)

it sounds like a really bad diaper rash.. keep her out of her diapers when at home if you can.I did this with my daughter when she was a newborn and although she peed everywhere alot, the air and the absence of the diaper and possible moisture allowed the rash to clear up. Her urine might be making the rash worse because it is so concentrated, which was the case with my child, so I made sure to get her to drink water in a bottle to dilute her urine a bit...hope this helps

Everywhere, like as in all over her body? Her pediatrician may tell you it's viral - a cold of some sort. My little boy got little red bumps all over his body when he was 4 months. I took him to the E.R. thinking it was an allergic reactions to something. The E.R doc told me he had an ear infections and a viral cold. He prescribed my son steroids and something that looked like penicillin. 7 days later the rash was still there, so I took him to his pediatrician and he told me to put lotion on his skin Lubriderm or Aveeno Baby. The next day the rash was gone. Try some lotion before freaking out. She may just have dry skin causing her to break out like a rash. If it was an allergic reaction to something she would have whelps instead of a rash.
Good luck!

Sounds like a yeast infection and the Dr is the best one to prescribe a treatment. Ointments and creams may acutally irritate it by locking moisture in. Let baby hang out without a diaper (on a waterproof pad!) and let her bottom be exposed to air and sunlight.
