It's legal here where I live in California and I do it sometimes.
It's best when traffic is stopped in a traffic jam, because nobody else is moving and you're not really taking advantage of anyone else.
It's worst in regular traffic because it's not as safe. If you come up to a stoplight between two cars, when the light changes you have to take off first so as not to get in their way. But it's not a very safe thing to jump into an intersection right after the light changes!
On the freeway here at certain times of day traffic averages about 5 mph, but it's stop/go/stop/go. At times like this I feel pretty good about lanesplitting, and it's pretty safe. But I see idiots on sportbikes lanesplitting at 50 mph!
Also, remember, if you ever get into trouble lanesplitting, if you ever clip a mirror or scrape a fender or (God forbid) go under the wheels of a semi, everyone including the judge will consider that it is entirely your own fault, since it wouldn't have happened if you weren't lanesplitting!

I always thought about doing this. When I was 16, I looked forward to jigsawing my way thru everyone. I'm only 18 now and find myself just following the rest of traffic in traffic jams and at red lights. I guess I always thought about the story my father told me. He was on the Long Island Expressway in heavy traffic and was cruising by lots of mad commuters. Some crazy guy opened his door just to spite my dad. Another time someone swerved to the left so that he didn't have enough space. I don;t want any of this to happen to me so I just chill.

There are a lot of things wrong with lane splitting. Drivers usually aren't paying attention, especially when sitting in a traffic jam. I've seen plenty of accidents, where a bike is lane splitting and a car just comes over on them because they didn't see the bike. Or another instance, a driver will open his/her door on a bike coming in between the lanes because he is jealous. That is why there are laws outlawing lane splitting.

I've done it when I'm late for an appointment and only once on the way to the daily salt mine when traffic was backed up at the level crossing on the way in. In the UK it is a common thing to see bikes splitting lanes it really is a stupid thing to do

they're good about California, it truly is called lane-sharing. There are some fairly certain guidelines about it. it really is not in simple terms for site visitors light fixtures, it truly is frequently for site visitors jams. Washington State has a bill contained in the legislature immediately offering to make it legal there. they're arguing that it's going to promote utilizing motorcycles using perceived reward. I rode in Germany for 7 years and it truly is authorized over there (i understand, you do not go with to ensure about different countriess, even though it truly is a precedent). So, even if it really is not legal in NH (definite, please examine the DMV internet website or call them) then perchance you could start a push for legislations such as WA and CA.

many people do the samething. i however cant since i live in ga and it is against the law. you know how cops are with bikes. the theory behind allowing bikes to move to the front is that we take up less space and it will allow more cars to get through the light at an intersection. i say keep on doing it man. you not hurting anyone your actually helping them

In the UK we call it filtering and it is the only way to make progress in town – it does require good vision and decision-making. With time you can make good guesses as to the hazards, bus stops, junctions, parked cars, homicidal maniac, idiot pedestrian, but they are only guesses, the key is to go only so fast that you can stop within your range of vision and to assume that everyone else is a danger.
