Sometimes it's obvious, as he farts loudly! But most of the time it's baffling and very uncomfortable as he drags his mouthful of breast around in a very alarming way. If he wants to stop, he normally sleeps or lets go - but it could be that he's unsure how to stop sometimes.

Before he gets latched on he also has a nasty habit of thrashing his arms and legs around, which can be very nasty with my hyper-sensitive nipples right now. I tried wrapping him up to keep his arms still, but he ended up like a writhing cocoon instead! Still very difficult to latch on with all that squirming.

Can anyone give me any pointers on what might be the cause? I'm sure he can't be the only baby who's ever behaved in this way!

Has he been spitting up a lot?

My daughter had reflux.... before she started spitting up she always seemed uncomfortable when eating. Even though she has a HUGE appetite, she just seemed wriggly and squirmy and just... uncomfortable.

Just something to keep in the back of your head.

It could be nothing at all! Maybe try a different feeding position.

Hon, your little one is just one month old. He might be a bit more active than others but actually it is part of human behavior called routing. The baby has little control of his nervous system. Inertly he knows that to stimulate mom's production of milk and also helps the milk let down.
Do you know what that means? When you are breast feeding. you can feel the milk in your breast feel suddenly full and the milk comes closer to the nipples. The movement of the baby stimulates what the breast needs to do.
If baby gets too frustrated hold your Nipple and hold it out for the baby. It is essential for you to NOT get stressed or frustrated at this point. Because your reaction can keep your milk from letting down.
Baby is new at this and so are you.
The best thing to do is to relax.

As others have said, you might need to check to see if baby has some reflux.

Baby might need to be burped before you feed him.

Is it possible that you aren't picking up his early hunger cues? He may just be hungry and cranky by the time he gets fed. I was always bad about asking my babies to wait just one minute while mama gets a drink, lets the dog out, uses the potty and lets the dog back in. By then they were pretty hungry and mad.
