Chances are it was the moon. When light goes through the atmosphere, the colours from the waves of light are dispersed, or are spread around. If the moon was low on the horizon, it means that there were so many particles and matter to go through -the longest wave length- red is the only colour to make it through. So that's why it could have of appeared redish.
Or it could be Mars... if he had some freaky natural eye lenses. ;)

Of course it was the moon, people, he said it was the moon.
It was red because of all the smoke and particulates in the air due to the fires and the usual smog in the LA area. The same thing happens here in the Pacific Northwest Mountains when we have forrest fires.

There are a lot of fires going on in California right now..
The ashes, soot and smoke are most likely what is turning the Moon red in your part of the country

hmm... it was probably the moon. It was probably just red from the combination of oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere, and all the smog pollution in L.A.
