in your rectangle example the answer is 20

n/16 = 15/12

12n = 15*16 = 240

n = 240/12

n = 20

n/16 = 15/12

Multiply 15/12 by 16 to isolate N, this gives you an answer of N=20 inches

to solve for, let's say, a, you'd just divide both sides by a
d=bc
----
a

I set it up like this because that's usually how it's written on paper so that might help you more than a / division sign. Hope this helped.
Ok so it doesn't work out right...the "a" is supposed to be above the "b" and the "c" is supposed to be above the "d" in the original so it's a/b=c/d...
