Listening to whole albums or just listening to songs?
I perfer whole albums, but when you're listening to prog, it's hard to get the whole picture when listeing to just a song.

I don't mean just singles, I mean just the songs of an album played individulally.

Whole albums.........with iTunes and Limewire so popular, people are only going after single tracks and missing many excellent songs. Albums offer an experience and in many cases, tell a story. Listening to part of the story doesn't have the same effect as listening to the whole does.

Agree with William. I could understand for a concept album or rock opera (if I was into that kind of thing) but I mostly just put iTunes on shuffle. And no, I don't just buy individual songs, I LOVE buying CDs and having my own hard copy of the music. I spend more money on CDs than anything else and I only download things to preview before I buy.
But that's aside the point. If I feel inclined to listen to an entire album (and I do often enough) I listen to the whole album. Ramones albums, T.Rex's the Slider, and the Kinks Kontroversy, and Wire's Pink Flag are often played all the way through for example. Because they're all wonderful and short enough that I won't be sick of it by the end. But mainly I just put it on shuffle as mentioned, I like to hear as many of the bands I love so much in a period of time as possible.

At Home...
Songs, I have about 1,500 in my media player
95% of which is Classic Prog and Classic Metal
I am listening to The Necromancer by Rush as I type.
And I love having everything from
Starship Trooper by Yes
to
The Green Manalishi by Judas Priest
to
Megalomania by Black Sabbath
At My fingertips.
In The Car I tend to go more for whole albums. My two favorites lately being
Overkill by Motorhead
and
Hall Of The Mountain Grill by Hawkwind.
75% of my favorite songs are album cuts by the way

whole albums, no question about it.
only when im in a rush/have time for a couple songs will i jump around the album ... or maybe get really rebelious and jump among /different/ albums.
most albums, the songs just flow into each other, even if its not through a direct stream of instruments.
i was shocked when i flipped through my sister's iPod to find there were albms with one-two songs shes listened to like 7 times, with no of the other tracks touched. not even a listen-to once, so she couldnt even say she /didnt/ like the songs.
claims she "has no time". i practically blew up at her.

When you say songs, do you mean singles?
Anyway, my answer depends. If an album only has a couple (or less) good songs, I'd just take the good songs. If the album is acclaimed and has mostly great songs, I'd rather listen to it. There will, however, always be songs better than others in the albums.

I think it totally depends on the mood I'm in and the album I'm listening to. Not all albums are worth listening to them in whole though. I tend to listen to albums from start to end mostly when they're newly accuired. After that I take my favourites and put them in my playlist of favourites and shuffle through them in random order.
btw. listening to songs only does not necessaryly mean listening to the hits. Most of my favourite songs from albums are no hits at all. And maybe I prefer listening to songs and not to albums sometimes only not to hear the hits.

Well, with Floyd albums, you can't get away with just listening to one song. When I first heard their concept albums, it was hard for me to sit and listen to the whole thing but now I can't stand it when people hop around. So I definitely prefer listening to the whole thing.

I prefer listening to the whole album, because most of my favorite bands take the whole album to tell the story.
Dream Theater, Rush and even Pink Floyd develop their stories layer by layer, until the story is complete.

The only times I tend to listen to an album from start to finish are when I get something new or when the album itself requires it (Sleep's Dopesmoker or Iceburn's Hephaestus, for example). I do prefer albums that have quality songs all through, but even then I'm not compelled to listen to them in any order. It's my choice.
