Just wondering how many people out there get upset when they hear a racist comment or question. I get mad when I hear a negative comment about anyone that is made off of sterotypes and made out of ignorance. So how many other people get upset about racist comments? Also do you only get upset when the comments about your own race or do you get upset if it has to do with another race.

I think most of you made good points. I would like to say though that maybe my question didn't come across like I wanted it to. I want to say that I do support freedom of speech. I also understand that people make jokes and comments about different stereotypes and I have no problem with that. I have even done it myself. And I guess saying it makes me mad was not the best way to put it. What I mean is I get annoyed when people make ignorant assumptions about other people based on race and culture. Especially when they don't really know anyone of that race they are just basing it off of stereotypes. I also found it funny how some of you made it sound like I am on of the uptight people that go around reporting every little thing that I find offensive. Which is simply not true. I was just wanting to get other peoples view points on the subject because I find it interesting. Thanks for all your answers

I get annoyed when I hear racist comments about any race.

More often than not, the person is an idiot that deserves only to be ignored.

SIDENOTE: Freedom of speech does not protect hate speech, threats and slander. UNDERSTAND YOUR RIGHTS MORE CAREFULLY PEOPLE WHO ARE CLAIMING FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!

I support freedom of speech and freedom of the press. I couldn't do my job without it. However, I understand freedom of speech. The first amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees that you will not be prosecuted by your government for something you say. This does not mean you can't get fired, thrown out of a plane or a resturant etc. It also doesn't mean that people aren't allowed to have opinions regarding what you say.

Sometimes the comments are no big deal; some people are so sensitive they get upset about nothing; some have a chip on their shoulder and try to make a comment something it isn't; then there is plain old confusion. Apparently, on Y!, "race" means any two families! I mean, how did "Mexican" get to be a different race? Or Albanian?
But then, some times the racist remark really is low, disparaging; people making those comments, whether about their wife, their neighbor, another race, should be dealt with harshly so they understand the seriousness of their comments.

I doubt there are many people who are beyond getting upset when they hear/read someone say something that they disagree with and/or think is offensive. But, since I'm a firm supporter of free speech, I can agree to disagree and appreciate the freedom of people to say what they want to say regardless of whether or not I like what they say.

So, yes, I do sometimes get upset when I hear/read racist comments (regardless of which race/s is/are being targeted). However, I do NOT in ANY way wish to see that the people who make such comments lose their right to speak them.

P.S. I understand my rights. And I also understand that rights are not equivalent to freedoms. Likewise, I understand that, just as I can say what I want, others can say what they want in response and also have the right to react in whatever manner they choose as long as they're not violating my rights. I accept this as a form of free speech and personal rights.

Well if its someone joking, and i mean literally joking, not just saying they are joking to not make them look as bad, then it's ok with me. Making fun of stereotypes doesn't necessarily mean you believe them. If its not a joke and I can tell it's not I makes me so mad and wonder why I even talk to people so ignorant. I do get very mad when people of any race say words that hurt another race, especially the infamous "N" word. I don't know about anyone else but that makes me furious especially when someone who is Caucasian says it, even more so when its someone who lives in a majority Caucasian area. It even bothers me when African Americans say it at times. I think the word should be dropped period.

I mainly get upset when the comments are aimed at my own race but, if someone makes inaccurate or intentionally cruel comments toward another race, I just shake my head and think about how hard they are making it on the rest of us by acting that way.

EDIT: I agree with Back In Action's philosophy on freedom of speech which is why I often let name-calling and other rants aimed at me just slide instead of reporting everything for spite.

Even if I get upset by something, I don't cry about it to Yahoo. I'm a big girl, and I realize that being offended is a part of life.

I don't get upset. People can say what they want. I believe in freedom of speech for all, not just for what is politically correct.
