Out of the three woods that others have said the Hickory is the hardest and the strongest and the Ash is the weakest. If you hit wrong with an Ash bat it is quite easy to break. There are other woods that are stronger than these Dogwood has a very tight grain and used to be used for splitting wedges to split other woods.Rose wood is very hard and was used for many tools and other things that required a hard surface. There is another wood called the tree of life [ I don't know it's real name] It was used to make bearings that were used on submarines because with these wooden bearings the machinery would run very quiet. There are other types of wood that are strong in other ways such as being very flexible.Need more info. to give a better answer. Iron wood is hard but not the hardest I have used it before Dog wood,Rosewood,And the tree of life are harder.

I believe ash and maple are the strongest. Thin handles can be gripped easier and allow for more "snap" by the wrists, however they do break more often. Make sure ur kids take care of the bat, keep it indoors. If they are gonna use it just for practice or at the batting cage they can tape up the barrel and this will help it stay in 1 piece, but obviously this cant be done if they are going to use it for a game. So I would go with ash or maple and unless its a surprise take ur kids w/ you and let them decide what kind of handle they want. Hope Ive helped. Good luck!
