The goal is to remove one of the variables. One way to do this is to multiply the first equation on both sides by -2.

(-2)(2x-y)=(8)(-2)
4x+3y=36
_____________
-4x+2y = -16
4x+3y =36
__________
5y = 20
y =4

Substitute 4 for y in both equations & then determine x.

Hint for the 2nd problem: by adding the equations as they are you will eliminate y & solve for x.

4x = 55

x = 13.75

2(13.75) + 2y = 19

27.5 + 2y = 19

2y = -8.5

y = -4.25
