People always ask me if I have seen different movies, but I have probably been able to sit through 10 movies in my entire life. I feel completely handicapped in that area. I get bored or sleepy, unless it's a documentary or reality-based movie and I feel like I'm learning facts. I feel the same way about books. I have never been able to read through a fiction or drama. Is this a matter of interest or something is wrong with me?

Note: I don't have a problem concentrating otherwise.

Steve: I can watch Chris Rock because I feel that's making fun of "reality" so I'm staying in touch with reality--while I can't watch funny movies because I get bored that they're taking me "out of reality" and seem useless.

Yes, I'm a control freak. And I feel anxious if I have to sit through the whole thing because I feel like I'm wasting my time and not being productive, so I have to get up and do something useful :(

Yeah, you're really uptight. Need to loosen up. LOL. JK.

EDIT:

Maybe you just have a need to feel like you're always learning, and don't like to feel out of touch with reality or out of control.

Fiction is an escape, and you can't control the outcome. Do you feel the need to be in control at all times?

I prefer non-fiction too, and cannot read a fictional book. But, I can watch Hitch over and over and laugh every time.

EDIT: Hey, we've all got idiosyncrasies. As long as it doesn't hurt anybody, vive la difference!

I have exactly the same problem with movies, even my kids did when we took them to the pictures when they were little. I think because we know it's not real, just a succession of still pictures flashing onto a screen to create an illusion of reality, not something we could relate to unless the subject was particularly engrossing which is rare. Similarly with books and television but you can switch the telly off and you can put a book down and come back to it. As for videos, they don't interest me in the slightest.

There is nothing wrong with you or with this trait of yours. You are allowed to be yourself and to make your own choices. I'm the same way about books, with the one exception of social or speculative science fiction or fantasy, I cannot make it through a novel. Boring. I also refuse to sit through a meaningless violent action flick. I either get up and leave or I fall asleep from sheer mental exhaustion or overstimulation.

I don't know why some people are so quick to judge or to pathologize anything and anyone who is supposedly different. I say "To thine own self be true" (Polonius in Wm. Shakespeare's Hamlet).
