Statistics are boring, and not particularly great for an opening, in my opinion.
I would ask the audience to imagine a shooting situation. "You're walking down the hallway with your friend... you're on your way to Calculus... suddenly you hear glass shattering and everyone starts running and screaming in a panicked frenzy... ten yards ahead through the stampede of students you see boy collapse in a red puddle..." Something like that.
Don't you think that would makes a better attention getter?
You can always talk about the statistics later.

Attention getter;
When getting attention (and I am real good at this lol) is go find why people are so against it. You need to find that nerve, then hit it!
To find that nerve you will have to do some research on the biggest gripe people have about the other side of the story.
Even your dress may help? Visual stimuli stays in ones mind. Make your eye black, dress as if someone just attacked you. That will shock the audience and get there attention.....
You are not finding much about this topic because it is so new! Teachers have been beat up and raped. You just need to dig for the information......
As for the resent ordeal in the news, that is about domestic violance, the lady just happens to be a teacher.

Start with a dramatic story, like interp. Be very dramatic and emotional.
"I sat in class one day, and everything was oddly quiet. I heard footsteps approaching our classroom. My teacher looked worried. 'Everyone, get under your desks,' she said. We did, just as a man burst into our classroom. He ran at our teacher, holding a knife. And there our teacher stood, no defense, while this man threatened every single one of our lives."
Here is a fear that i've had for awhile, and in truth, this sort of thing DOES happen.
That could just be your attention getter. But you will have to be dramatic, like your telling the storyline Prologue to a book or play.
Good luck, i love speech class at my school :)

Bring up the Virginia Tech Shooting and in some way describe that if the teacher of the room he first entered has a gun, he/she could have acted and possibly saved all those lives. (Research it first though, I think the first time he acting out violently was in a classroom...but I could be wrong)

I woke up this morning to a cup of coffee and a bagel. I got dressed and played good music on my stereo on the way to work. I was happy and ready for my class...then he took out a gun...
Is this the way any individual should start a day?

too sad to do that research. and I dont think you will find anyone in favor of teachers bringing weapons into school. they usually end up in the hands of someone else and shoot the one who owns the weapon.

We've all heard of colibine and it was a tragite{SP} and no one would like to see that happen again. Teachers that would carry weapons will help preventing that happening.

I have used this in sales but it may be a bit raw for you. Stand up tall and say "lets talk about sex . I will show you how to keep the fing guns out" May not work for you but it is amusing.
