They are constrictors and eat primarily insects. In the western states they have taken to eating bananna slugs though this behavior has not been recorded elsewhere.

That depends on where you are. In North America, the garter snakes are ones that just grab small prey and start swallowing without envenomation or constricting. What is called a garter snake in Africa is venomous. This is one argument for using scientific names rather than common ones. Scientific names are the same worldwide.

Garter snakes are ambush hunters--I used to have one. A book or website would probably say constrictor though.

They're just garden variety snakes. They are the most widespread reptile species across North America. They are non venomous. They eat whatever they can overpower, slugs, rodents, insects, birds, fish, etc.

Garter snakes (sometimes wrongly called garden snakes or gardner snakes) are common across North America, from Canada to Central America. They are not poisonous. Garters rarely constrict their prey, instead stunning or killing it before eating.

Some garter snakes constrict, but they are much weaker than other constrictors.
They usually just grab and swallow. They are small and eat small animals that don't really need to be constricted--such as insects, lizards, amphibians, worms, the occasional egg...
