Christmas is set aside to celebrate the birth of Christ. The date is really not known. Dec 25 is the just the date that was set aside for celebrating. The Christmas tree is actually mentioned in the Bible somewhere, I'm not sure what chapter, but it really does come into the celebration part. There is no correlation between Christ and Saint Nicholas. There really was a St. Nick in a European country hundreds of years ago that when at Christmastime he really went into the poor people's houses on Christmas Eve while they were sleeping and left a little token/gift for the children. The flying reindeer and the North Pole and elves, etc., have all come through history made up by man and are a myth but it's for children to believe in if they want. They find out soon enough that Santa was really mom and dad. The gift giving comes from when the night Christ was born, the three Wise Men came to the manger bearing gifts and that is why we give gifts to one another. (You didn't ask that specifically but that's how giving gifts to one another came about) No, Christ and Saint Nicholas are not the same. Christ is the Son of God whether you are a Christian or not. Even Christians let their kids believe in Santa but still explain to them that Christmas is really about Christ's birth. That's where the saying comes from: Jesus is the Reason for the Season. It's also about good will to one another and peace and having that feeling inside that unfortunately most of us only get at Christmastime. If we all could keep it inside all of the time, the world might be a better place. An early Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Christmas has nothing to do with Christ. It was called the winter soltice and it was a day that they celebrated the sun gods birthday. When the catholics wanted to convert pagans into christians, they didnt want to give up their festivals so they compromised and joined pagan practices with christan storis. This includes easter too! The tree started before christ ws born. It is mentioned in the bible in Jerimah, but it tells us that to cut a tree down and put ir up and deck it with silver and gold is a foolish thing. People dont even research what they believe in. Look in any encyclopedia, book or on line it will tell you that these practices are pagan. True christian during the time it was switched refused to celebrate. In doing so you are celebrating the bitrth of a false god.
Santas name means the deciever.- Old St. Nick. Just study a little you will be amazed at what you find. Im a Christian but I dont celebrate any holidays since I found this information out.

The middle of winter has been celebrated before Christ was even born. The end of December was the perfect time for most countries to celebrate, because it was the end of the winter months & long nights. Most religions had something to celebrate on the winter solstice, but not Christians. Though no one knows for certain, Jesus was probably not born during the winter, but Christians decided to celebrate at about the winter solstice anyway. Saint Nicholas was a real person who was a monk (christian). He was known for his kindness & generousity. It is said he gave away all his wealth & dedicated his life to helping the poor & sick. He became very popular among the people & he is celebrated on the eve of his death, Dec. 6. Santa probably comes from his idea of giving to the poor & from the time of his death.
Trees that kept their green color during the winter had a special meaning. People would hang pine & such on dorrframes or something. Some believed they kept away ghosts, witches, evil spirits, & illness. Many thought of it as a representation of the green plants to come. Germany has the credit of starting the decorating of christmas trees. A man wanted to recapture the seen of stars twinkling among the trees.
Sorry if this got long.

A good explanation from "doglover" on Christmas. However, However, non-Christian will not agree with your last comment: "Christ is the Son of God whether you are a Christian or not." This is absolutely false as Jesus was a human being. God doe snot have a family. God is not cruel to punish His own son for someone else sin. Christian trinity comes from pagans belief that there are three gods such as in Greek and Hindu Myths.

It's a Hallmark holiday that all retailers depend on. The red Santa suit came from Coca-cola ads in the 40s. The tree comes from people having a tree in their living room in very cold climates for a warm feeling. The December 25th date comes from a pagan celebration of the winter solstice.

st nicholas was a saint who gave a man some bags of money so that he could pay the dowries of his three daughters so they wouldn't have to become prostitutes.
i'm not sure why we celebrate st nicholas at the same time as jesus, probably just to make it more of a secular occasion, what with commercialism and all

Christmas, as is, the social gathering of the delivery of Jesus Christ (even in spite of the incontrovertible fact that he wasn't technically born in December in accordance to the Bible, this is the date the church picked out using fact the social gathering date). Christmas does have it rather is origins interior the yuletide social gathering, even in spite of the incontrovertible fact that, Christmas on my own is the social gathering of the delivery of Jesus Christ. Many Christian holidays have their origins in plenty extra historic earlier celebrations of pagan religions. the authentic which skill has extra to do with somebody concept, consisting of for me, it has to do with a time to spend with kin, spreading the ideals of giving to the fewer fortunate and sharing. the inspiration for those ideals come from my Christian history, and from the way my kin has consistently celebrated Christmas.
