Hi QueenBlack
I agree with you. You're not African-American. You're American. I'm not African-South African. I'm South African. But why do you use the name QueenBlack, if I may ask? Has that anything to do with your real life identity? Are you Black? If so, where are your ancestral roots?

Africans don't want you called African Americans , American blacks want to be and call themselves African Americans. I suppose for the same reason other nationalities immigrated to the USA often refer to themselves as Irish Americans, Italian Americans, Chinese Americans etc... I agree once your born here your an American period. Or maybe a North American since South Americans call themselves South Americans. Why can't all USA born residents be called Americans why do we have to be called white or black or whatever, oh wait that would end the civil rights movement which in 2007 is all crap anyway.

Africans don't want to call black Americans African-Americans! It's the black Americans that want to call themselves that!
Something to do with "roots" and forefathers I guess...
If you ever do visit Africa and see it at it's worst when children are dying of hunger and people are lying in hospitals waiting to die of AIDS under a blanket of flies and "soldiers" are killing people for no apparent reason with AK47s then you won't want to call yourself African at all....
Then you would rather just be called a Black American.

good question. i could think of that a individual who's born in Africa then includes united statesa. and turns right into a citizen is now African-American. Like Don Cheadle. And for the checklist Africans are not all "Black". lower back on situation, somebody is born in the U. S. is North American and that i do no longer see the would desire to differenciate between the ethnic communities. i became chatting with a Costa Rican guy the different day and he instructed me that as quickly as he utilized for his modern pastime he became requested why he did no longer verify that he became Mexican-American. clearly, he became very indignant. In his opinion, you will desire to team human beings mutually according to the place they're from regardless of their epidermis tone and shade. He favored to be referred to as Costa Rican instead of a Latino by way of fact it became greater particular. making use of his concept, you're perfect if we are born in the States, we are North American.

"African-American" is what black American's call themselves. The name was not applied to them by other people.
Personally I think its ridiculous, they have absolutely nothing cultural in common with Africans. Genetically most of them are less than 10% African anyway.

I'm African and am irritated by black Americans who call themselves "African-Americans" (and who, in the very same breath call themselves white!). Just because your fore-fathers origins are in Africa doesn't mean you're automatically African!

I do believe you to be deluded to a great degree as well as suffering from a severe identity crisis, but can however relate in a certain sense to what you are attempting to express.
Africans and Europeans are both not indigenous to the Americas and as white Americans are not referred to as "European American", it is probably somewhat unfair to label black Americans as "African American".
However, the obvious root of such classification would be reasonable and in my opinion relates to the backwardness that black Americans bring to the continent together with their inherent aptitude to crime as evidenced by American prison population demographics as well as their lack of contribution to virtually all fields of science, arts and culture.

It's a question of roots and there is a lot of anti blacks, still in parts of America. Perhaps it just makes them feel a bit special and different.
