you are alive so that you can pass on your genes
you are merely their host and your only goal in life (reproduction) is to pass on those genes
you are a host of your own genes.
depressing?

camp, you said something totally stupid and then told me to educate myself.
actually i have taken philosophy, ethics, and world philosophy classes so i guess i probably know more than you.
the argument that we are merely the host of our own genes is not mine, it is from someone a lot smarter.
finally, i think a question like this does fit in the philosophy category because it deals with the very nature of who we are.
whats your problem man?

No. The idea is to come to terms with reality.

It would be, were that the case, but it is not. "Genes" is just a word for inheritance of biological patterns. It arose, together with the music of Bach, out of the big bang or big bloom of the universe. It tells us little about the fundamental nature of life. Genetics has deeper causes.
Modern observation, by intense attention to externals, naturally finds its own conclusions and relative truths. There are superficial and deeper causes for everything. Thus genes do not actually cause or ultimately determine anything, rather they are in the realm of effects or secondary causes. It is the same with brain and body. The real causes are far deeper than genes and brain patterns. The light bulb in our ceiling may be considered the source of the light, or one may look to the generator, to the waterfall, to the rotating Earth, to gravity, and so on. And then, science cannot truly define gravity or thought.
We should not make science or materialism a religion. And should not make any ready made religion the pivot of your thought. You can build a universe of relgions from your own spiritual genes.

Not at all, because I am more than the sum of my genes. Bodies may just be hosts for genes, but human genes got a little too clever with their survival strategies, and created bodies (and brains) that like to go do things on their own completely unrelated to reproduction. Speaking as one of those emergent processes, I for one am having quite a happy time living, and while I am biologically driven to reproduce the same as everyone else, that at least for now makes up a rather small portion of my overall life.

no, I don't believe in the physical realm
You are all creations of my own mind, you are a part of me, you just don't realize it.
So genes don't exist and you are not a host to anything, because I am a host to you.
Educate yourself, if you want to ask philosophical question learn something about philosophy first.
If philosophy "depresses" you then you haven't studied it enough. Theres an answer for everyone; if you don't like this one keep reading and you'll find one that fits.
In the mean time, suck it up.

Accepting that, I would have to ask, what is the purpose of a person that either can't or chooses not to "pass on their genes"? Do they have none? I realize that you are just asking opinions on someone else's thoughts but I think it is sad that anyone ever felt that way. If they thought that, then I guess they WERE depressed. Hopefully you live you life so that it has much greater impact even if only for your generation.

I like to think that genes are just a way to pass on the purpose of life to the next generation.

Yes. I refuse to serve this purpose. Therefore, I will kill myself to prevent myself from reproducing, and prevent my genes from perpetuating themselves. What audacity for them to think that THEY are the point of existence! This like like nuts and bolts thinking that they are the point of an automobile!
Future generations will not have to suffer this ignominy, by the way. Artificial life will replace biological life, and my genes can go to hell.

No that is only on the physical plane. On the spiritual, we can learn and grow and pass on wisdom.
