I only heard this once, but that was too much. After my mother-in-law died in the hospital, her daughter and I were waiting for the personnel from the funeral home to come for her body. She had been pronounced dead about 20 minutes earlier when a long, LOUD sigh issued from her open mouth. Of course, both of were scared silly; my sister-in-law ran for a nurse, and I started pressing the buzzer for the nurse. We both really thought that her death had been pronounced before she was really dead! But when the nurse came in, she took her temperature, checked her pulse, tried to get a blood pressure reading, and declared to us that she was really dead, and had been since the earlier declaration, and that it was not uncommon for a corpse to make such a sound after death, as accumulated air escapes following muscle collapse. I don't know whether this is truly the reason for the sound; I do know that I will never again stay in the room with someone who is supposedly dead, and chance hearing what was for me the worse sound in the world.
So for me, it was a one-time thing. For the asker, I'd agree with the answerer who suggested ear-plugs, or maybe headphones, but just loud enough to drown out other noises, not so loud that it will do permanent damage to your hearing. If you do that, you may eventually yearn for ANY sound, even that one which is so distasteful to you now.
Mine may not be considered the BEST ANSWER, but I am sure that it will be the most unique.

I think it's when the entire bumper, chrome rims, and other car parts of a Ford Escort or similar older compact car that has the driver's cheap-o extra bass speakers stuffed into it, vibrates, making additional noise and - if it's possible - all but drowning out the alleged music being played on the car's inferior but nonetheless loud stereo.

The sound of silence...truthfully. I came from a big city, and cannot sleep where I live now without some music or the TV on.
