about 18 wildfires were started over the weekend from Santa Barbara to San Diego county, reaching the Mexican border. At least one was arson, the others may be downed power lines and accidentally started by construction workers, nonetheless, all of them were fueled by the hot dry weather, and the Santa Ana winds. Most of the fires are contained now, but they leave behind A LOT of damage and a long lasting air problem here in SoCal. About 1 billion in damage, and i think couple thousand homes were destroyed along the way.

Look it up in Yahoo news.

Regarding what started the fires - in San Diego anyway - most were started by electrical lines being torn down by high winds (gusts of up to 80 MPH) combined with the Santa Ana conditions (easterly winds, upper 90s temperatures, and near 0 percent humidity). This created firestorms that moved along at the speed of the wind, destroying nearly everything in its path.

A couple of the fires are currently being investigated to see if they were started on purpose (arsonist or someone being stupid, like the Cedar fire of 2003 that was caused by a lost hunter sending up a signal flare).

The "fire thing" is that here in the San Diego area, over 1000 homes have burned along with hundreds of thousands of acres of land. Many thousands of people have been evacuated from threatened areas and it is not yet over.
