I'm 73 and have had a computer for roughly 2 yrs. now. And I''m probably the most computer illeterate user on this website.

But I had a senior companion, my first, about a year ago, who was an absolute whiz-kid when it came to computers.

He told me that it was always best to set your computer on "stand by", when not in use. It only cost something like $1-2.00 a month.

Reasons and benefits? You save more money if you turn it off, but it's negligible. And at such at rate, it doesn't matter anyway.

Unless you have a modem, it prevents damage to your computer should a "power surge" occur. For this reason, one should get a modem anyway.

And regardless of what anyone says, computers do overheat sometimes.

And too, the greatest benefit of all, is that if you don't turn your computer off but put it on "stand by", it's warm enough to accomodate the electrical surger that occurrs when you first activate it.

90 % of computer crashes are caused by such a surge, which happens when you first activate it. So for this reason alone, it's best to never turn your computer off, but put it on "stand by" when not in use.

I'm certainly no expert, so you can consider my recommendations for whatever you think the're worth.

A trying to be helpful,

Wotan

I action picture star each and every question I answer (and each so often questions i do no longer answer)....and there have been some events a whilst in the past (i think of it befell particularly often almost immediately once I hit point 5 and had no answering limits) as quickly as I spoke back one hundred questions in an afternoon...and run out of stars that way. i think of they have been often at circumstances whilst i became no longer properly, however....and that i glance to have much less time to spend at here presently. i'm plenty extra selective with the questions I answer now....I each and every so often sense that I could desire to attempt and answer some extra of my contacts' questions....as recently, i do no longer look to respond to better than a pair of questions according to day.

No. If you are not using it for a few hours, turn it off. It is good for a computer to be re-booted periodically, and you save electricity by shutting it off. Your internal parts last longer, too.

The idea that leaving it on was wrong way back when it was passed around as truth.

Electrobonehead is wrong. My brother has worked in basically every area of computers and currently is an executive at Dell. He knows more about computers than anyone I have ever met...according to him...turn it off.

Just popping in to say hi (sort of) but really to say I'm saving this to my watchlist as I'm curious myself. I leave mine on all the time and have a MAC and have a feeling it might not be a good idea. But hey.....although I don't know the answer....I'm going to give you a star for the question --- hope that's cool at least.

TUNT IT OFF during a storm, otherwise it's o.k. to leave it on. Read your manual for your computer for sure.

definately turn it off you could over heat and damage your processor and lose massive amounts of system memory. I recommend to turn it off if it will not be in use for over 2 hours.

You have two options here,
-Leave it on and waste little power to save you the boot time.

or

-Turn it off and back on whenever you want to use it.

Its better to leave it on but your should atleast put a screensaver on. It would really help to leave it on because then you dont have to wait for it to boot up and all that and plus its not gonna bother the hardware or anything though.
