First you isolate x by subtracting 2.5 from both sides of the equation:

x+ 2.5 -2.5 = -1.4 -2.5

Do the math. The positive and negative 2.5's cancel out and you are left with the answer:

x = -3.9

Subtract 2.5 from both sides, because you need to get x by itself. Anything you do on one side, you have to do to the other, so -1.4-2.5 is -3.9.

isn't it -3.9? I think so because you would move the 2.5 over to the other side, making it become negative. and Just add the -1.4 together with the -2.5
