You have to put one of the variables on the other side of the equation. Ideally, when you're done you should have something like this....

Y= something times X plus or minus something else.
Or, in standard form it should be written as
Y=mX+b where m is the Slope and b is the constant.

The best rule to remember when using equations is what ever you do to 1 side, you must do exactly the same on the other side (to keep it balanced).

So, if you were to "add Y" to each side your equation would look like this...

2X-Y +Y = 14 + Y

Now... on the left side you have -Y +Y well, that's the same as +Y - Y right? or simply Y-Y... which is basically zero, nothing, nada.

So now the eq looks like:
2X = 14 +Y

So, let's subtract 14 from each side...

2X -14 = 14 + Y -14

Guess what 14 - 14 is... yep. ZERO!

So there you have it...

2X - 14 = Y

Or, the next rule of equations is that you can flip the sides.
so you have

Y= 2X -14

Now solve for X=8 is easy as

Y = 2 * 8 - 14
Y= 16 - 14
Y= 2 tada!

I'm assuming the first # is x; the second is y--------
In the first example, just substitute 8 for the x---so
2times8=16
so x =16
Now the equation only has 1 variable------ -y
So, 16-y=14-----to get letter on 1 side and numbers on the other subtract 16 from left and right side----
Now -y=14-16
-y=-2
You can now change the -y to y by multiplying by -1 on both sides of the equation( Rule: negative times negative =positive) The minus 2 on the right is now pos 2.

The answer is Y=2

To check your answer, put 8 in for X; 2 in for Y,. and the answer is 14

I hope that you're not too confused; it's easier to show in person.

Rewrite the equation as
y = 2x - 14
x=8, so y(8) = 2(8) - 14 = 16 - 14 = 2
x=10, so y(10) = 2(10) -14 = 20-14 = 6
x=0, so y(0) = 2(0)-14 = -14
x=?, so y(?) = 0 = 2x - 14, 2x = 14, x = 7
x=?, so y(x) =10 = 2x-14, 2x = 24, x = 12
x=?, so y(x) = 6 = 2x-14, 2x = 20, x = 10

if x=8 then y=2
if x=10 then y=6
if x=0 then y=-14 0-(-14)=14 -(-14) = +14
if y=0 then x=7
if y=10 then x= 12
if y=6 then x=10
