If its an error, it will eventually be caught.

Carefully look at your paystub to see if there is a possible explanation for the overage. Did they pay you for more hours than you actually worked? Did they forget to take out taxes or benefits? Did they pay you more per hour than you are supposed to make? Larger than expected paychecks are sometimes legitimate--for example, maybe you are getting a bonus. To be sure, contact your HR department and tell them exactly what happened. They will be able to tell you what to do from there. If the money was given to you by accident, they will eventually find the mistake and demand that you pay it back.

First, contact your HR department and request they help you understand WHY it is different than you expected. Is it possible you received some form of bonus or payment for a prior shortage? If you were overpaid, this gives them a chance to correct it without leaving you short of money when they take back the extra. Even if they ask for the check back, they should give you most of what you should have been paid to cover you until they recompute the exact amount.

Actually happened, but was too late to fix it before bills came due that day, ( won too many bids on eBay... ) since getting it fixed would have taken 2 days too long, so deposited it, told payroll about it before the next weeks paycheck was cut... so they "fixed it", and for that week: I had to get by on $7...

By CA law you have to give it back. If you spent it, the employer can come back later and ask for the money back. So don't spend it just yet.

Tell your employer and your payroll department. If you don't, you'll look like a thief when they find the error - and if you spend it, you'll be hard pressed when you have to give it back.

tell the company right away and pay the differance
back to the company. because if you take the extra money and put it in your pocket. in a way its called stealing, and thats wrong.

They will catch the error. Give it back now and look like an honest employee.
