I am a firm believer that sleep is for replenishing not only your physical energy levels, but your mental energy levels as well. Do you ever notice that you can go to bed angry or sad or just plain twisted and wake up feeling clear and confident again in the morning. Sleep is when our brains process. And dreaming I guess is a time for our brain to "relax"so to speak. That is why babies sleep so much, partly because they are so little, but also because they are constantly learning when they are awake and their brains need to process all the new data.

Sleep is a science in itself. What did you mean by opinions? Our brain keeps on working sorting out the day's input. Dreaming is part of that. The dreams you recall come from what is called REM sleep which stands for rapid eye movement. While you may be out of it, your brain isn't! Wouldn't it be funny if everything shut down including automatic heart beats and breathing? Naw...

well, technically, the brain isn't sleeping. it just isn't as active.
most your energy comes from the physical operations you perform during the daytime. when you're awake, you tend to use energy in whatever you do. sleeping doesn't require much energy. instead, you body uses that energy to repair things in your body such as cells and other biochemical processes that keep you well.
it's been said that your brain synthesizes all the data from the day. things have been "registered in your brain" and to help you remember this knew knowledge, your brain reflects on it. that is why you tend to think of things that happened that day or other things on your mind in your dreams. i suppose that this is factual.
this is a good question. scientists are still preforming studies to understand the brain. i think what makes it the hardest is that there's not much quantitative data you can gather on thought processes and your brain at rest.

the brain does several things while the consciousness is asleep.
it files the days activities and feelings(emotions)
it helps the body purge itself of toxic chemicals in the system
that have built up due to stress
you don't just have 1 dream a night, you have many but you most likely will remember the last one before waking

When you're asleep, your body heals and your mind rests from the day's work. It's necessary to function properly and to think well. The brain just goes over what was done during that day (dreams) during the nighttime. It also opens up parts of your mind that are more open to things.

I know that we use more of our brain power while we sleep. That astounded me, because I thought we used it more while awake. I don't remember when but I saw it in PBS. I also know that learning strengthen while we sleep.
