my dad accidentally
hit his knee with a sledge hammer
it hurts him a lot and he
cant even walk on it
what are some things he can do to
reduss the pain and
swelling?

I had reconstructive knee surgery last year...he needs an anti-inflammatory medication to relieve the swelling, and ice it down, and keep his leg elevated to prevent the blood from pooling around the injury.

GO TO THE DOCTOR.
if a large heavy object hits any part of your body and it results in pain and swelling...a doctor visit should be your first step.
put some ice on it should initially help with the swelling and keep it elevated to reduce blood flow to the injury until you can get to a doctor.

He really should go to the ER and have it checked out. A sledge hammer is really a very heavy hunk of metal and could have done damage to the kneecap itself or the ligaments underneath it.

Go to the doctors
atleast put ice on it if he doesnt want to go to the emergency room.
sit or lye elevate leg above heart w/pillows or something.
drink plenty of fluids to keep from swelling because of dehydration make sure you use the ice or cold peas something frozen.

Elevate it, and ice it.
If it's pretty bad, go to the hospital.
Check the bill that they give you. You will likely be charged for things that have nothing to do with your dad.
