This truck has a hydraulic clutch release. Its not fully depressing the clutch springs in the pressure plate and releasing the clutch disc. Check the fluid level in the reservoir. Pull the rubber boot out as well that is under the cap. Have seen where guys have added fluid but just inside that boot. If the fluid level is OK you may have air in the system that needs to be bled out. Or you may have a defective master or slave cylinder. Good luck with it.

You most likely need a new clutch. I have an 87 ranger and had basically the same thing happen as you. Never slipped gears, just couldnt put it in anything but reverse while running. Once you get it going you can power shift without the clutch if you absolutely have to drive it. It could be something more simple like a broken slave cylinder too. I dont know how much a new clutch+ installation costs, but it is pretty labor intensive and takes a while.

This really sounds like a clutch not releasing problem. The shifter fork and synchronizer cannot slip into gear if the main shaft is spinning too fast. It stops spinning when you depress the clutch pedal.
Have the clutch checked. Somewhere it's not releasing from either the pressure plate or flywheel.

I had this same problem. and i changed the slave cylinder, clutch, and throwout bearing. and it still did the same thing. so i checked the clutch pedal itself, and the pivot at the top was wore and not depressing the master cylinder all the way when you push the pedal down, so the clutch was still engaged and wore it out.

You probably have a hydraulic operated clutch. It may be low on fluid in the master cylinder or it may have air in the system. It is not the tranny at fault. you may want to purchase a CHILTONS manual at auto supply.

its probably just a bad clutch. you may not need a rebuild. take it to a transmission spectaly shop. on older trucks like that rebuilds like that are easy a cheap (compared to more modern cars)
